Israeli war kills 263 journalists in Gaza and destroys media sector

The Gaza Government Media Office stated that Israeli forces have killed 263 journalists and media workers during three years of war. Director Ismail al-Thawabta reported these figures to document the severe toll on Palestinian press corps. The conflict has also wounded hundreds of other media professionals while displacing many more from their homes.

Al-Thawabta noted that 50 journalists are currently detained in Israeli prisons. He specified that 23 of these individuals remain in custody. The official further highlighted that three reporters are still missing. He named Nidal Suheil al-Wahidi, Haitham Jamal Abdul Wahid and Ahmad Issam al-Agha as those whose whereabouts remain unknown to families.

The director outlined extensive damage to media infrastructure caused by Israeli attacks. He reported that 16 satellite television offices were damaged or destroyed. Additionally, 11 radio institutions suffered similar fates due to military operations. Twelve newspaper and magazine offices were also hit during the ongoing strikes in the region.

Twenty-three digital media organizations were damaged or destroyed according to the report. The statement indicated that 27 printing houses were affected by the strikes. Five union and rights groups involved in media work were also targeted. Al-Thawabta estimated total losses for the sector at about $1 billion.

Most surviving journalists now report from tents and hospital courtyards. They lack electricity, internet access and protective equipment. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate described this reality as journalism without walls. This reflects the loss of homes and offices for hundreds of reporters who continue working amid destruction.
