Israel Revokes Dutch Diplomatic Status Over Settlement Ban

Dutch foreign minister calls the move unnecessary while defending temporary sanctions on goods from illegal settlements.

Israel Revokes Dutch Diplomatic Status Over Settlement Ban

The Israeli government has ordered diplomats from the Netherlands in Ramallah to return their diplomatic documents within seven days. This retaliatory measure follows a recent Dutch ban on goods originating from Israeli settlements in occupied territories.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced the decision on Sunday. He stated that officials at the Netherlands Representative Office must hand back their papers, effectively revoking their official accreditation and status in the region immediately.

The Dutch government is now carefully considering its response to this significant escalation. The order comes as a direct reaction to the Netherlands imposing restrictions on trade with settlements considered illegal under international law frameworks.

Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen criticized the Israeli move as unnecessary. He expressed deep regret over the decision to revoke the accreditation of his country's diplomatic staff stationed in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Berendsen clarified that the temporary sanctions are not targeted against Israel itself. He emphasized that the measures stem from a legal obligation to avoid contributing to unlawful situations in the occupied Palestinian lands.

The statement highlighted the distinction between the state and the settlements. The Dutch position maintains that their actions are consistent with international obligations regarding the status of territories occupied since nineteen sixty seven.

International law generally prohibits Israeli settlements and outposts on occupied Palestinian land. Many countries and international bodies view these communities as a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and other relevant legal instruments.

The diplomatic row marks a new low in relations between the two nations. It remains unclear how the Netherlands will proceed after the seven day deadline passes for the return of the diplomatic documents by staff.
