US Blocks Abbas from UN Visit as Visa Sanctions Extend

Washington bars Palestinian leadership from New York for second year, citing reform failures and actions that undermine peace prospects with Israel.

US Blocks Abbas from UN Visit as Visa Sanctions Extend

The United States Department of State announced an extension of visa restrictions targeting Palestinian Authority officials and PLO members. This move effectively bars President Mahmoud Abbas from attending the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, marking the second consecutive year he is prevented from delivering his scheduled address to the global body.

Washington stated that these sanctions result from a failure to implement promised reforms and ongoing activities that harm peace prospects. The department emphasized that these measures are necessary due to violations of commitments made to the United States by the Palestinian leadership and their continued political maneuvers.

Accusations included pursuing statehood recognition through international channels rather than direct negotiations with Israel. The statement also cited taking legal disputes to international courts and providing financial support to individuals labeled as attackers by both Washington and Jerusalem as violations of existing US laws and agreements.

Despite the individual travel bans, the Palestinian mission to the UN retains operational status under the UN Headquarters Agreement. This waiver ensures that regular staff members can continue their diplomatic work in New York, even though specific high-ranking officials are denied entry into the United States for the foreseeable future.

Abbas was expected to highlight the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and demand renewed support for a two-state solution. His agenda included addressing recent recognitions of Palestinian statehood by Western nations like France and the UK, while also condemning the expansion of settlements and violence in the occupied West Bank.

Critics note that no Israeli officials face similar restrictions despite an ICC arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Human rights experts and Palestinian officials argue that singling out Palestinian representatives violates US obligations to allow UN-invited guests access, undermining Washington’s stated commitment to facilitating a negotiated peace process in the region.
