EU Chief Warns West Bank Crisis Threatens Two-State Solution

European Council President António Costa warned that de facto annexation and illegal Israeli settlements are increasingly threatening the prospect of a two-state solution. He highlighted settler violence and displacement of Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank during his address on Monday.

Speaking at a high-level international meeting on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, Costa addressed the Gaza peace plan. He emphasized that conditions in the occupied West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, are deteriorating rapidly and require immediate international attention from global leaders.

Costa stated that the two-state solution is being jeopardized on a daily basis in these regions. He pointed to visible images and heard testimonies regarding the ongoing crisis. The situation reflects a deepening humanitarian and political challenge for all involved parties today.

He described daily settler violence, impunity, and the displacement of whole communities as critical issues. Costa affirmed that these settlements are illegal under international law. The European leader stressed that such actions undermine the legal framework necessary for lasting regional stability and peace.

The president insisted that immediate steps must be taken to keep alive the chance for an independent Palestinian state next to Israel. He called for renewed legitimacy for the Palestinian Authority through democratic elections. The European Union strongly supports holding these votes in the near future.

Costa urged Israel to facilitate the electoral process to ensure its success. He said the international community must provide younger generations with renewed hope for a different future. This collaborative effort is essential for building trust and ensuring long-term political viability for everyone.

He reaffirmed support for an independent, democratic, contiguous, sovereign and viable Palestinian state. Jerusalem should serve as the future capital of both states. Costa concluded that action is required to preserve the two-state solution and the path to peace for all.
