Gaza Nursing Students Pledge Hope Amid University Ruins

Seven hundred nursing students gathered on the grounds of the devastated Islamic University of Gaza this week. They wore white coats to take their professional oath on September 22. The event transformed an academic ceremony into a powerful declaration that the next generation refuses to surrender its future.

The second and third year students participated in a ceremony organized by the university Nursing College. It was named the Prince Abdelkader Al-Jazairi Cohort Class of Hope and Mercy. Algeria’s Al-Baraka Association sponsored the event held amidst a healthcare system shattered by years of Israeli attacks.

Nursing College Dean Dr. Abdul Karim Radwan addressed the students directly during the gathering. He described them as a generation that endured war horrors while refusing to abandon education. Radwan stated the white coat represents hope and responsibility toward people whose lives have been devastated by ongoing conflict.

Hatem Al-Yazji from Algeria’s Al-Baraka Association emphasized that supporting Palestinian universities cannot wait. He argued education is essential for preserving identity and preparing a generation capable of rebuilding destroyed infrastructure. A graduate shared her story of continuing studies after losing her children and suffering severe injuries from bombing.

The image of students standing together captures their determination to preserve medical institutions. Every student completing training adds capacity for a population facing enormous rehabilitation needs. The white coat now symbolizes care and endurance rather than just professional attire. Destruction has not succeeded in ending Palestinian education or preparation for future care.
