Rights Group Says Israel Holds 37 Palestinian Journalists

The Palestinian Prisoner Society stated on Sunday that Israel is currently holding thirty-seven Palestinian journalists in its prisons. Nineteen of these individuals are held under administrative detention without formal charges or trials. All detentions occurred following the start of the Gaza conflict in October two thousand twenty-three.

Recent arrests include Muath Ammarna and Sabri Jibrin, who were taken after Israeli forces raided their homes in Bethlehem. The group noted that Ammarna has been repeatedly targeted by authorities and is now being detained for the third time specifically due to his ongoing journalistic work and reporting activities.

Journalist Mahmoud Fatafta received a forty-eight month prison sentence on incitement charges. This ruling represents one of the harshest penalties issued in such cases according to the statement. Authorities increasingly utilize these charges alongside administrative detention based on secret files to suppress professional media coverage.

Bushra al-Tawil was transferred from Damon Prison to solitary confinement at Ramla Prison. The society accused Israeli authorities of intensifying isolation measures against female prisoners. These restrictive actions include food deprivation, denial of medical treatment, and maintaining poor sanitation conditions within the detention facilities.

Detained journalists face torture, abuse, and medical neglect similar to other Palestinian prisoners. The group described killings and enforced disappearances as part of a systematic policy. This strategy aims to restrict Palestinian reporting and prevent documentation of alleged Israeli crimes and violations in the region.

Israeli forces detained more than one hundred Palestinians across the West Bank in the previous week. Total detainees from the area since October two thousand twenty-three exceed twenty-five thousand. Thousands more have been taken from Gaza amid escalating raids, demolitions, and displacement campaigns by occupying military troops.
