Red Sea Film Festival Cancelled Amid Regional Conflict

Logistical concerns cited as Saudi Arabia loses another major international event due to escalating wars.

Red Sea Film Festival Cancelled Amid Regional Conflict

The Red Sea Film Festival has been cancelled, marking the second major international event lost by Saudi Arabia this year. Organizers cited logistical considerations rather than directly referencing the ongoing regional wars in their official announcement of the decision.

The statement explained that the choice followed a comprehensive review of various factors. These included the specific timing for the next edition and the complex logistical requirements involved in staging an international event of such a significant scale and magnitude.

Officials added that the festival would return at the right time and under the right conditions. This cancellation highlights how regional conflicts are increasingly disrupting the kingdom’s ambitious efforts to promote itself as a global hub for entertainment and tourism industries.

Formula One previously cancelled the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix scheduled for April. The fallout from the Israeli-US war on Iran contributed to that decision. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia faces a sharp escalation in its conflict with the Houthis in neighbouring Yemen.

The Houthi group has targeted Saudi cities, oil infrastructure, and Red Sea oil shipments. Established in 2019, the festival was central to Riyadh’s push to build an international film industry. It will face renewed competition from Dubai when it returns in 2027.
