Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s finance chief, demanded intensified military operations throughout the occupied West Bank. He suggested replicating tactics used in Gaza against local populations. This call emerges as Palestinians endure growing settler aggression and severe constraints on their freedom of movement daily.

During a podcast interview, Smotrich spoke while election campaigns heat up for next month. He reiterated his desire to abolish the Palestinian Authority entirely. Additionally, he pushed for broader Israeli dominion over Palestinian lands within the occupied territories under current administration.

These statements arrive as communities face increased pressure from both soldiers and civilian settlers. Roadblocks, gates, and checkpoints continue to choke Palestinian mobility significantly. The resulting isolation creates profound difficulties for residents trying to access essential services and livelihoods regularly.

Forces sealed off Turmus Ayya’s northern entry near Ramallah, harassing locals there. Similar closures affected Aboud, Nabi Saleh, Atara, and Taybeh villages recently. Military personnel also set up new inspection points at Yabroud and Ein Siniya entrances to control traffic flow strictly.

Such measures compound an existing web of barriers that fragments the occupied land. Permits and physical obstructions severely limit how Palestinians traverse their own territory. This systemic restriction impacts daily life, separating families and workers from their places of employment and study.

United Nations records identified 925 obstacles to movement in the West Bank by December 2025. This figure highlights the extensive nature of imposed limitations on the population. These barriers disrupt access to medical care, schools, and agricultural lands for thousands of people consistently.

From early 2026 through July, settler assaults injured over 850 Palestinians according to UN data. That averages more than three victims every single day during this period. Settlement outposts are expanding into zones where Palestinian administrative control remains weak or nonexistent currently.

The International Court of Justice ruled in July 2024 that Israel’s presence is illegal. It mandated an immediate halt to all new settlement construction activities. Smotrich’s push for deeper control raises fears of further displacement and escalated military actions against vulnerable civilian groups.
