UK Considers Defying Israeli Closure Order for Jerusalem Mission

Legal advice suggests Israel lacks authority to shut East Jerusalem consulate as Foreign Secretary reviews all diplomatic options.

UK Considers Defying Israeli Closure Order for Jerusalem Mission

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband confirmed his government is weighing defiance of an Israeli order to close the consulate in East Jerusalem. Officials are reviewing every option to stop the shutdown set for October 8. This directive retaliates against recent UK sanctions on goods from Israeli settlements announced earlier this month.

Former Attorney General Dominic Grieve advised that Israel holds no legal right to shut the mission. He argued the facility stands in occupied Palestinian territory recognized by the UN and most states. Grieve stated Israel cannot claim sovereign control over East Jerusalem while acting merely as an occupying power.

Grieve urged legal challenges to preserve the UK stance on Jerusalem’s undetermined final status. He noted keeping the office open does not concede sovereignty to Tel Aviv. The opinion highlights that British envoys do not seek accreditation from Israel, so there is no credential to withdraw or cancel.

Miliband called the potential closure morally wrong and harmful to vital community support work. He noted the British mission dates to 1838 and operates separately from the Tel Aviv embassy. While physical expulsion is unlikely, Israel could block diplomats from returning after leave or harass vulnerable local staff members.

The Foreign Secretary condemned Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank as a global stain. He pledged to match words with action against abuses and illegal occupation. Despite a ceasefire starting in October 2025, attacks continued, killing over 1,400 Palestinians. A UN inquiry previously found evidence of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
