16 Killed as Damaged Gaza Building Collapses on Displaced

The six-story As-Saada residential building collapsed before dawn Wednesday in the As-Sina’a area southwest of Gaza City. The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that sixteen displaced Palestinians, including women and children, were killed in the incident. At least twenty-five others sustained injuries while emergency crews worked urgently to recover bodies from the debris.

Civil Defense crews recovered nine bodies and rescued fourteen survivors from beneath the massive concrete slabs. However, about one hundred Palestinians remained missing or trapped under the rubble. Among those believed to be buried are at least fifty children, prompting desperate appeals for immediate international assistance to support the ongoing rescue operations.

The bombing-damaged structure collapsed onto displaced families while they slept. It also struck tents erected beside the building. Rescue teams faced severe shortages of heavy machinery and resources, forcing them to dig by hand. One child remained buried for more than an hour before being reached, highlighting the critical lack of specialized equipment.

Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal warned that around 2,000 structurally compromised buildings across the Gaza Strip remain occupied. Residents have no alternative shelter despite the imminent risk of collapse. Basal urged the international community to provide heavy machinery to strengthen rescue efforts and facilitate the recovery of those still missing beneath the dangerous debris.

The collapse underscores the continuing danger posed by residential buildings left unstable by Israeli bombardment, amid an acute shelter crisis.
