Kristof Labels West Bank Actions Ethnic Cleansing Amid Rising Violence

Pulitzer-winning New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof stated that Israeli settlers blocked him during a spring visit to Palestinian villages. One village has since been cleared of residents. His remarks highlight ongoing tensions and displacement efforts in the occupied West Bank region.
Kristof wrote on X about families struggling to farm ancestral lands despite repeated violent attacks by settlers. He noted that the settlers blocked his access but left when he attempted to interview them. He questioned the nature of these actions directly.
He asked what else such actions could be called except ethnic cleansing. This statement reacted to a video by Yehuda Shaul showing the demolition of Khirbat al-Tabban in Masafer Yatta. Israeli authorities carried out the destruction of the village structures.
Shaul warned that without serious international pushback, more communities face destruction. He cited the political agenda of Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich. Masafer Yatta has long faced military campaigns to displace residents under firing zone pretexts.
Palestinian media reported additional violence including land seizure and raids. Israeli forces detained Karim Asakreh at a checkpoint east of Bethlehem on Saturday. Settlers vandalized the Suwais family home and felled trees in Khalayel al-Louz area.
The military raided Nazla al-Sharqiya and Qaffin north of Tulkarm at dawn. Forces entered Qalandiya refugee camp using stun grenades and opening fire. Authorities also seized 7,498 dunams in Qabatiya for a road and military tower.
