UN Warns of War Crimes in Syria as Oxfam Pushes UK on Settlements

The United Nations has warned that Israeli actions in Syria, including civilian detentions, may constitute war crimes. This alert coincides with Oxfam urging the United Kingdom to expand its recently announced ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank to include all services and investments.

Fionnuala Ní Aolain addressed the UN Human Rights Council regarding these developments. She stated that Israeli military operations in southern Syria have become increasingly sustained and entrenched over time. The Commission expressed deep alarm about the continued violations of international law by Israeli forces in the region.

As of June, the commission identified forty-nine Syrians detained by the Israeli military on Syrian territory. This group includes two children who are believed to have been transferred across the border into Israel. These detentions form part of the broader pattern of violations that have drawn sharp criticism from international bodies.

Oxfam welcomed the UK decision as a significant step toward respecting international law. Jean McLean, the charity’s Chief Influencing Officer, noted that the ban supports Palestinian rights. However, she emphasized that this measure remains one of the key actions required to fulfill legal obligations under recent advisory opinions.

McLean argued that British settlement trade drives human rights violations and entrenches illegal occupation. She pointed out that settler and state-led violence is currently surging in the region. The organization insists that more robust measures are necessary to address the ongoing crisis and protect vulnerable populations effectively.

The charity also highlighted concerns about British-made arms components fueling genocide in Gaza. McLean stated that these components continue to kill and maim civilians indiscriminately. Consequently, Oxfam called on the government to immediately halt all arms sales to Israel when they might be used for violations.

Oxfam urged the use of every diplomatic and economic tool available to end the unlawful occupation. The group wants the UK to support Palestinian self-determination through comprehensive policy changes. This includes extending the current ban to cover all financial investments and services linked to illegal settlements.

These parallel developments highlight growing international scrutiny of Israeli policies. The UN focus on Syria complements civil society pressure on European governments regarding the West Bank. Both instances reflect broader demands for accountability and adherence to international legal standards in the Middle East conflict zone.
