Israeli Triathletes Excluded From Derry Cup After Local Club Objection

Four Israeli athletes will not compete in the European Triathlon Cup in Derry, Northern Ireland. The local North West Triathlon Club strongly objected to their participation. This decision follows objections regarding the ongoing suffering of Palestinians during the current conflict.

The club learned of the potential participation after names appeared on a provisional entry list. This list was published on the World Triathlon website recently. The organizers immediately made strong representations to Triathlon Ireland and Europe Triathlon authorities.

Officials stated they could not support such participation under the present circumstances. They emphasized that no Israeli representation would compete at this specific event. The final start list for Saturday’s competition now excludes all athletes representing Israel officially.

The club stressed its position was not directed at individuals due to religion. It also was not based on ethnicity or personal identity factors. The objection concerned Israeli representation in international sport during ongoing Palestinian suffering.

Organizers opposed attempts to present normality on the international sporting stage. They argued this occurs while Palestinians continue to suffer greatly. Triathlon Ireland clarified that athlete selection is managed by Europe Triathlon under existing rules.

This development arrives amid growing protests across Europe over Israeli participation. Campaigners urge sporting bodies to take action over the war on Gaza. Football fixtures involving Ireland and Israel have also faced venue changes and restrictions.
