Groups Say Israel Hides Fate of Gaza Detainees

Palestinian prisoners’ rights organizations revealed on International Enforced Disappearances Day that Israel continues to forcibly disappear thousands of Palestinians from Gaza. Many detainees remain completely cut off from their families, lawyers, and human rights groups in a practice causing deep suffering.

The organizations stated this practice leaves families without basic information about whether their loved ones are alive. They do not know where they are being held or what condition they are in during this prolonged period of uncertainty and distress.

They warned that the lack of legal and international oversight creates conditions in which torture can take place. Abuse and medical neglect can occur without accountability when monitors are denied access to detention facilities and prisoners.

The groups said Israel has used military detention frameworks alongside detention camps to restrict access. This includes designating Gazans as unlawful combatants and blocking lawyers and the International Committee of the Red Cross from visiting them.

According to figures cited by the organizations, 1,358 detainees were classified by Israel as unlawful combatants as of early August 2026. The identities of 53 of the 99 Gaza detainees who reportedly died in Israeli custody have been established.

They called on the United Nations to demand immediate disclosure of the whereabouts of disappeared detainees. The international community must ensure access for lawyers and investigate reports of torture and deaths in custody to hold those responsible accountable.
